Dermatologist explains why eyebrows thin with age
As we age, eyebrows can become sparse and less defined. The causes can be aging, genetics, lifestyle, and even some worrying conditions, according to Huffpost.
Why eyebrows may "disappear"
Dermatologist Claire Wolinsky explained that the decrease in hormone levels in both men and women is often the reason for thinning eyebrows. As testosterone and estrogen levels drop with age, it affects the hair growth cycle and the hair follicle itself.
Hair follicles become thinner, and some stop producing hair entirely.
Makeup artist Natalie Dresher noted that certain lifestyle habits can also contribute to this problem. For example, not properly cleansing the eyebrows can lead to thinning.
Another main cause could be how much time you’ve spent plucking your eyebrows over the years.
"I often hear, ‘I over-tweezed my brows when I was young,’ and it’s a huge factor," the expert added.
Eyebrow thinning can begin as early as in your 30s or 40s, but it generally becomes more noticeable in your 50s and beyond. The exact age can vary significantly depending on genetics, overall health, and lifestyle factors.
One key cause could be hypothyroidism – a condition where the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones. Other possible issues include nutrient deficiencies, alopecia, eczema, or severe dermatitis.
Also, make sure your vitamin D and thyroid hormone levels are within normal ranges.
Do eyebrow growth serums work?
Eyebrow growth serums are a popular product today, but there are documented side effects of ingredients like bimatoprost. These may include redness, eye irritation, eyelid discoloration, and drooping eyelids.
If you want to try an eyebrow growth serum, choose a product suitable for your skin type, and be sure to follow the instructions carefully.
Eyebrow stylist Joey Healy offered some tips for choosing a serum. Avoid those containing hormones, as they can have side effects such as irritation, dryness, puffy eyes, dark circles, or eyelid darkening.
The impact of cosmetics
Experts suggest applying a brow gel to fluff up the eyebrows and add some density.
You can also use an eyebrow pencil to create small, hair-like strokes. The goal is to achieve natural-looking eyebrows.
Brow powder can also be effective. It creates a shadow on the skin, which is a very realistic way to add density.
With lamination, you can brush the brows upward to give them a fuller, thicker appearance. Combine this with an eyebrow pencil and powder.
