It would be wise to deploy not only American troops in Greenland but also troops from Europe. This, in turn, would contribute to stability in the region, says Robert Brieger, Chairman of the EU Military Committee.

“In my view, it would make perfect sense not only to station U.S. forces in Greenland, as is currently the case, but also to consider stationing EU soldiers there. That would send a strong signal and could contribute to stability in the region,” he said.

Brieger added that, ultimately, this is a political decision that must take into account many interests.

Trump's statements on Greenland

With the approach of his second presidential term, Donald Trump has resumed the topic of buying Greenland, which he has repeatedly stated, including after taking office.

In particular, yesterday the American president expressed confidence that the United States would gain control of Greenland. According to him, 57,000 islanders allegedly want this. In addition, Trump's allies have recently submitted a bill to buy Greenland.

A couple of weeks ago, Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede said that Greenland was seeking to strengthen ties with the United States, albeit on its terms. In particular, he talked about defense and mining.

Around the same time, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen spoke to Trump by phone, responding to his ambitions for the island. She said that Greenland should decide on its own about independence.
