US President Donald Trump's policy toward Ukraine is unlikely to change after a Democratic victory. After all, the president will retain enough unilateral powers in foreign policy, Politico reports.

Trump unlikely to change after the elections

A Democratic victory in the November midterm elections in one or both chambers of Congress is unlikely to significantly constrain Trump's actions abroad, including in Ukraine, current and former US and foreign officials told the outlet.

Moreover, Congress's new powers will not take effect until early next year, leaving Trump several more months of freedom to act on Ukraine.

He still has veto power and is willing to ignore Congress's demands. It is also worth noting that the president has far more authority to act unilaterally abroad than at home, Politico writes.

"He’s going to be angrier," predicted Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut.

The senator said other countries should not expect the Republican Party to abandon Trump's worldview, including his contempt for allies, once Trump leaves office.

"Ukraine, the European Union, the world — all will be dealing with a politically wounded Trump who’s likely to double down on what he feels he must have," the outlet said.

Governments need to start preparing now for scenarios that seem completely crazy, Politico writes.
