Democrats pledge to support Johnson's initiative to help Ukraine and Israel
This Saturday, April 20, the US is scheduled to vote on bills that include aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. It should also be supported by House Democrats, states the House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
According to the agency, the House will hold a series of votes on the aid package on Saturday, and the Senate will take it up for consideration next week.
“We’re going to do what’s necessary to make sure the national security bill gets over the finish line. It’s not Johnson’s foreign aid package. It’s America’s foreign aid package in terms of meeting our national security needs,” House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said.
Speaker Johnson will need Democratic votes to approve the aid plan. This is because ultra-conservatives in the House Freedom Caucus have previously stated that they will vote against the procedural measure to start debate on it.
What happened before
Recently, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson proposed to separate the Senate national security bill into four bills.
On April 17, he published the text of the initiative to finance assistance to Ukraine. In particular, the document provides for the transfer of ATACMS to the Ukrainian army.
It may be approved as early as this Saturday.
More details about what is included in the speaker's initiative can be found in the material of RBC-Ukraine.
