Washington views the deepening of cooperation and ties between Tehran and Moscow as a significant destabilizing factor. This applies to specific regions and the world as a whole, according to US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller during his briefing in Washington.

The statement came in response to journalists' questions about Iran's recent airstrike on Israel, and whether the State Department is concerned about the involvement of Tehran's friends and allies—Russia and China—in this war, especially given "their collaboration in other front, in Ukraine."

"So certainly we see the deepening ties between Iran and Russia as something that’s incredibly destabilizing for the region," said the US official.

He clarified that it is "incredibly destabilizing" to the world and added that this applies not only to the Middle East but "everywhere that Iran and Russia operate."

Cooperation between Iran and Russia

Iran has been aiding Russia with weapons in its war against Ukraine. Back in 2022, Tehran provided Russia with Shahed attack drones, and related equipment, and assisted in training UAV operators and establishing the production of these drones in Russia.

However, official Tehran has long denied supplying Moscow with Shaheds.

In early September, reports surfaced that Iran had also delivered a large batch of ballistic missiles to Russia. Nevertheless, Iranian authorities assured that this was not the case.

Additionally, in early October, following Iran's large-scale missile attack on Israel, The New York Times reported that Tehran had asked Moscow for assistance due to a potential Israeli attack. Specifically, Iran is seeking Russia's help in conducting satellite reconnaissance to identify targets.
