Almost half of Denmark's citizens consider the United States a significant threat to their country. They are also opposed to Greenland becoming part of the US, according to a survey published by The Guardian.

The survey, conducted between January 15 and 22, involved over 1,000 participants. The results showed that 46% of Danes consider the US "a very big threat" or "a fairly big threat" to Denmark.

This is higher than the percentage of people who view North Korea or Iran as threats - 44% and 40%, respectively. However, the threat from Russia remains much higher, with 86% of respondents saying they consider Moscow a threat.

In addition, 78% of those surveyed said they would oppose selling Greenland to the US, but 72% said the final decision should be made by Greenland, not Denmark.

As previously reported, the vast majority of Greenland's population opposed leaving Denmark.

Trump’s statements on Greenland

In 2019, Trump stated that US control over Greenland was an "absolute necessity" for international security. After his victory in the 2024 election, he again discussed buying the island and even suggested using force to convince Denmark to cede the territory.

Recently, Trump claimed that the US would gain control over Greenland, asserting that the local people wanted it. His allies introduced a bill to "purchase the island." In response, Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Egede said that while the island seeks to strengthen ties with the US, it wants to do so on its own terms, particularly in defense and the mining industry.

At the same time, according to Bloomberg, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reached out to her European allies for help in resisting Trump's demands to hand over Greenland.

Frederiksen and Trump also had a conversation before the inauguration. Sources stated that Trump was "aggressive and confrontational" on the issue of Greenland.

In addition, following Trump’s statements, two Russian Tu-160 bombers took off over the neutral waters of the Arctic Ocean. The flight was reportedly planned.
