Daily 'urban' habit that can help you burn 20 times more calories
If you are trying to lose weight and looking for an effective way to do so, a simple exercise can help. This exercise involves walking upstairs.
The New York Post reports on how this exercise aids in weight loss.
How to lose weight by climbing stairs?
Research shows that climbing stairs is more effective than walking on flat ground. Lauri van Houten, vice president of the International Skyrunning Federation, explained that, in general, it is a fact that climbing stairs gets you in shape faster and burns more calories.
Studies indicate that you burn approximately 20 times more calories when climbing stairs compared to walking on level ground. Even when descending stairs, you burn about five times more calories, as your muscles work to slow down your descent. This could be all you need to know if you're trying to lose weight.
Dr. Alberto Minetti, a physiologist and biomechanist at the University of Milan, has conducted extensive research on human movement, including stair climbing. He states that this exercise can be performed by anyone, as it is simple and free.
Dr. Minetti has dedicated his career to research rather than treating patients. He advises older individuals and beginners to pay attention to their pace. He himself climbs the stairs to the third floor of his residence in Milan. He mentioned that he often takes a few deep breaths before climbing, which makes him feel fresher at the top.
In his scientific study, Minetti notes that using your arms while climbing stairs adds extra strength. Handrails also provide safety.
How to climb stairs
The simplest exercise anyone can do is to climb stairs at a pace of one step per second. This way, you can burn about 120 calories in 10 minutes of activity.
If you want to make it more challenging and increase the load on the front of your thigh and calf muscles, try walking at a faster pace while focusing on the front of your foot.
To engage your glute muscles, you should skip a step when climbing.
