A massive power outage struck Czechia. In Prague, more than 100 thousand users were left without electricity, while trams and subway lines partially stopped, reports iRozhlas.

Previously, electricity was absent in most of Prague and other Czech cities. Public transportation was even forced to stop in the capital. The blackout could have affected more than 100 thousand people.

"There was a power outage in some parts of Czechia. We are investigating the causes and solving the problem. The central crisis headquarters is on standby," said Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala.

The company Pražská energetika (PRE) said that the blackout was caused by an emergency shutdown at the ČEPS substation in the Chodov district of Prague. Experts are working to eliminate the consequences of the accident.

Blackouts in Europe

On April 28, Spain, Portugal, and Andorra experienced a sudden power outage. The incident left millions of people without electricity and telecommunications and disrupted transportation in Portugal and parts of southern France for several hours.

Critics pointed to power fluctuations from renewable energy sources, but the cause of the failure is still unknown. Subsequently, an official investigation into the blackout began in Spain, which was closed.

On May 20, mobile communications and the Internet stopped working throughout Spain. Many operators, including Movistar, Vodafone, and Orange, were affected by the outage.
