Why amber DNA won't help bring dinosaurs back
In the iconic movie, scientists extract dinosaur DNA from mosquitoes trapped in ancient amber, fill the gaps with frog genes, and grow embryos. In the real world, this scenario faces strict limitations imposed by the laws of physics and biology.
How so?
Even under ideal conditions, DNA breaks down relatively quickly. Studies show that the half-life of DNA is about 521 years.
After 6.8 million years, not even the smallest traces of genetic material remain. Since dinosaurs went extinct around 66 million years ago after an asteroid impact, finding a complete genome is absolutely impossible.
So far, the oldest DNA fragments ever recovered by scientists belong to mammoths and prehistoric horses that lived less than 1 million years ago.
The Chickenosaurus project and alternative paths for geneticists
Since cloning a dinosaur in its original form is impossible, some scientists are looking for alternative approaches. One of them is reverse engineering based on birds, which are direct descendants of prehistoric theropods.
Renowned paleontologist Jack Horner leads the Chickenosaurus project, which aims to activate dormant ancient genes in chickens.
During experiments on chicken embryos, researchers have already managed to alter some traits, bringing them closer to their ancestors - including the development of early teeth, tails, and typical claws.
Using genome-editing tools such as CRISPR-Cas9, scientists may be able to create hybrid organisms with dinosaur-like features. However, these would only be modern imitations, not a true revival of an extinct species.
Do real dinosaurs already live among us?
The main scientific conclusion is that dinosaurs never completely disappeared.
Paleontological discoveries and genetic studies have proven that modern birds are a direct evolutionary branch of theropod dinosaurs.
"From hollow bones and feathers to posture and behavior, every sparrow, pigeon, or ostrich carries traits that originated in the Mesozoic era. Ancient giants continue to live among us - simply in the form of birds," researchers concluded.
