Cosmetologist's top 6 procedures to restore healthy skin
Skin is the largest organ in the human body, performing numerous functions including protective, thermoregulatory, vitamin synthesis, and even immune functions. However, when its lipid barrier is disrupted, it cannot fulfill its duties effectively. Cosmetologist Olga Pozdnyakova advises how to properly care for the skin.
What is the lipid barrier of the skin
"The skin performs its functions only if its protective (lipid) barrier - a mixture of skin fat, sweat, and dead cells from the upper layer of the skin - is not damaged. This is, so to speak, a water-oil substance that protects against foreign substances and microorganisms, and also prevents moisture loss," explains the cosmetologist.
Factors that disrupt the lipid barrier include:
- dry air outdoors and indoors
- exposure to ultraviolet radiation
- washing with soap or harsh surfactants
- use of alcohol-based lotions
- aggressive procedures
- use of low-quality cosmetics unsuitable for your skin type
Signs of a disrupted lipid barrier include dryness, flaking, tightness, allergic reactions to cosmetics, and increased skin sensitivity.
How to care for facial skin
- Switch to gentle cleansing and temporarily exclude acids and retinoids from your skincare routine.
- Toning is a crucial step in restoration. It restores the skin's pH balance to normal and should include additional moisturizing and soothing factors.
- Moisturizing is essential as skin cells can only exist in a water environment.
- Sun protection is mandatory; always use a sunscreen with SPF factor.
- Nourishing the skin requires products with lipids to support the lipid barrier.
- Antioxidants such as vitamins C and E help strengthen and protect the skin.
