COVID now
Mark Woolhouse, Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh, warned that new waves of the virus continue to be caused by a combination of new variants and a partial weakening of immunity to infection.
Distinguishing the symptoms of Covid from the common cold, which can include a sore throat, nasal congestion, headache, and cough, is still a challenge.
Specific symptoms distinguishing Covid from common cold
Fever
Fever is more commonly associated with Covid. Summer colds can cause mild fever, but it is usually lower than in Covid cases.
Loss of taste or sense of smell
Anosmia (loss of taste or sense of smell) is a common symptom of COVID-19 that is rarely seen during summer colds.
Fatigue and body aches
Covid often causes severe fatigue and body aches. Although a cold in the summer can cause fatigue, the level of fatigue is usually less pronounced.
Shortness of breath
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath is more common with Covid, especially in more severe cases.
Duration of symptoms
Symptoms of COVID-19 can last longer and change over time. The summer cold usually goes away within a week to ten days.
