Confirmed Russian battlefield equipment losses reach 2-year high
Russia suffered record equipment losses at the Ukraine front in October 2024, the highest in the past two years of war. It is explained by the high pace of the offensive, according to the Russian independent outlet Agentstvo.
According to data from the Oryx project, analyzed by Agentstvo, Russia lost more armored vehicles, aircraft, helicopters, and other equipment in October than in any other month since October 2022, when Russian forces retreated from the Kharkiv region.
Confirmed Russian equipment losses on the battlefield have reached a two-year high.
Specifically, since October 1, the Russian army has lost 695 pieces of equipment that were either destroyed, damaged, abandoned on the battlefield, or captured. These losses include 253 IFVs, 103 tanks, 41 APCs, four aircraft (two Su-25s and two Su-34s), and one helicopter (Mi-28).
The Russian army’s losses in October 2024 are the highest monthly losses since October 2022, when Russia lost 1,032 pieces of equipment. In September 2022, Russian forces lost 1,179 pieces of equipment, the highest monthly toll recorded throughout the war.
According to Oryx data, the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost 276 pieces of equipment in October, including 47 APCs, 28 IFVs, 21 tanks, and one aircraft (Su-24M).
In September, Russian equipment losses amounted to 547 pieces, in August - 434, in July - 584, and in June - 576.
Ukrainian forces started losing more equipment in August after the operation in the Kursk region began. In the first month of the offensive, the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost 219 pieces of equipment, in September 253, and in October 276. In July, Ukrainian losses totaled 167 pieces, and in June - 92.
Reasons behind increased losses
The increase in equipment losses is linked to the high pace of the Russian army's advance in October. In the past week, it has seized more territory in eastern Ukraine than at any other point this year. Over 200 square kilometers were added to the territory captured during the grueling summer offensive, resulting in significant Russian troop and equipment losses.
The Oryx project is a system developed to track and analyze military losses in various conflicts, focusing on reliable visual evidence. A key feature is that only confirmed losses (e.g., destroyed, damaged, or captured military equipment) with photographic or video evidence are included in their database.
