Colombia has announced the launch of a National Anti-Drone Shield following US strikes on Venezuela, according to Defence Blog.
The project, worth 6.2 trillion Colombian pesos (about 1.6 billion dollars), is aimed at strengthening the country’s airspace protection amid rising regional threats, the Colombian Ministry of Defense reported.
The program involves creating a nationwide system for detecting and neutralizing drones, covering border areas, critical infrastructure, airports, and major cities.
The Ministry noted that the decision was made on an accelerated timeline following US strikes on Venezuela’s air defense facilities.
The anti-drone shield will feature a multi-layered architecture with early warning sensors, electronic warfare tools, physical interceptors, and a unified command system.
The project is being called Colombia’s largest investment in airspace defense in the country’s history.
The first phase of implementation will begin on January 16 with closed consultations involving international companies and government delegations.
The system will be deployed in stages after suppliers are selected, with funding secured within the 2026 budget plan.
Trump’s hints at an operation in Colombia
Following the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro by US forces, President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of territorial claims over several countries in the region. Among them, he mentioned Colombia, where, according to him, the US could carry out an operation.
In addition to Colombia, Trump also made statements regarding Mexico, Cuba, and other Latin American countries, without specifying the potential forms of US actions.
The US president’s remarks provoked a strong reaction in Bogotá. Colombian President Gustavo Petro emphasized that the country is ready to defend its sovereignty against any incursions, declaring his personal readiness to protect the nation.
The Colombian leader stressed that, as commander-in-chief, he acts strictly within the Constitution and has already issued strict orders to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking and ensure national security.
