An unpleasant odor from a washing machine does not always indicate problems with the drum or drainage system. One of the most common causes of a bad smell can be a dirty detergent drawer compartment, according to Good Housekeeping.

The main mistake

One of the most common mistakes is assuming that the detergent drawer stays clean simply because it is constantly exposed to detergent and water. In reality, it is one of the areas most prone to constant dirt buildup.

The detergent drawer should be cleaned because detergent residue, fabric softener buildup, and stagnant moisture can create a sticky film that over time leads to odors, mold, and mildew.

Powder and fabric softener are not always fully washed away during the washing cycle, so they gradually accumulate in and around the dispenser.

Over time, this buildup can also affect the washing machine’s performance, as it may interfere with proper detergent dispensing.

Many people are not even aware that the dispenser can be fully removed. The removal mechanism can be hidden or not obvious, so it is often mistaken for a fixed part of the machine.

How to clean the detergent drawer

First, remove the drawer completely. Rinse it with warm water to soften residue.

Use a soft brush to clean away dirt, especially in corners and small compartments. Avoid using harsh tools, as sharp edges or scrapers can damage plastic parts and small internal components, which may cause bigger problems later.

Cleaning frequency depends on usage, but for most washing machines, monthly cleaning is enough.

To reduce buildup, leave the drawer slightly open after washing to allow ventilation.
