China to send Vice President for Trump's inauguration
China will send Vice President Han Zheng to Donald Trump's inauguration. That may be a disappointment for Trump's team, Politico reports.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the vice president would attend Trump's inauguration as “Xi Jinping's special representative.”
According to American tradition, world leaders are not invited to presidential inaugurations. Yet, Trump's team invited Chinese leader Xi Jinping to the ceremony, but he declined.
Han Zheng's presence may be a disappointment for the new US president's team, as he plays a mostly symbolic role in the Chinese leadership structure.
The presence of Foreign Minister Wang Yi would allow the parties to move on to negotiations and set the tone for US-China relations at the beginning of the new administration.
Change of power in the United States
The inauguration ceremony of US President-elect Donald Trump will take place on January 20. He has not yet officially taken office.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has not yet announced who will be sent to Trump's inauguration. But the ministry emphasized that this is a domestic American political event and not the best format for negotiations or meetings.
