China sentences ex-minister to death for bribery

Former Chinese Minister of Agriculture Tang Zhengjiang has been sentenced to death with a reprieve for bribery, reports Reuters.
Tang Renjian, the former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, received a death sentence with a suspended execution in a court in Jilin Province for accepting bribes.
Between 2007 and 2024, while holding various positions, he took bribes in cash and property. According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, cited by Reuters, the total amount of bribes exceeded 268 million yuan (approximately $37.6 million).
The Changchun Intermediate People’s Court suspended the execution of the death sentence for two years, taking into account that the former official confessed to his crimes.
Who has been sentenced for bribery in China
As previously reported by RBC-Ukraine, in 2023, Li Wenxi, the former vice chairman of the Liaoning Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, was sentenced to death for accepting bribes.
Between 2004 and 2021, using his official position, he facilitated third parties in administrative and business activities. In return, he received bribes totaling more than 540 million yuan (approximately $78.36 million).
The former official admitted his guilt and expressed remorse for his crimes.
