Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi assured his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, that Beijing does not supply lethal weapons to Russia.

"Regardless of how the international situation changes, China hopes that China-Ukraine relations will develop normally and continue to benefit the two peoples," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Wang Yi, according to the Chinese ministry, expressed to Kuleba Beijing's "principled position" on the "Ukrainian issue" (as the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine is called in China) and insisted that he would promote peace and negotiations and would not "add fuel to the fire."

"China does not seize opportunities and does not sell lethal weapons to conflict areas or parties to the conflict. We will continue to play a constructive role in ending the war and restoring peace as soon as possible. Even if there is only a glimmer of hope for peace, China will not give up its efforts," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

Kuleba's meeting with Wang Yi

Yesterday, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Kuleba met with Wang Yi. As reported by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Kuleba met with his Chinese counterpart to discuss a number of issues, including bilateral relations, trade, and the need to establish a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister informed Wang Yi about Ukraine's vision of the upcoming global peace summit in Switzerland.

China's ties with Russia

China began to maintain closer ties with Russia after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In particular, Beijing refused to join the sanctions imposed by the United States against the Kremlin.

Beijing and Moscow share a mutual interest in challenging US dominance in the world order, as its relations with democratic countries are becoming increasingly tense.

Earlier, China's permanent representative to the UN, Zhang Jun, made an anti-Ukrainian statement at the UN Security Council, calling on the United States to stop supplying weapons to Ukraine.
