Popular American right-wing activist Charlie Kirk was likely killed by a 22-year-old Utah resident, reports the New York Post.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that Kirk’s killer was turned in by “someone very close to him.” According to the American leader, it was the suspect’s father. He turned in his son through “a minister who was involved with law enforcement.”

“I hope he’s going to be found guilty, and I hope he gets the death penalty. What he did — Charlie Kirk was the finest person and he didn’t deserve this,” the American leader added.

Trump did not name the suspect, but law enforcement sources told the New York Post that it was 22-year-old Utah resident Tyler Robinson.

According to authorities and the publication’s sources, the suspect likely fired a single shot from an elevated position about 180 meters from the tent where 31-year-old Kirk was staying.

In the first reports, the suspect was described as an armed man in jeans, a black shirt, and a black vest, who, with a long rifle, was on the roof of a building east of Utah Valley University’s library.

Charlie Kirk’s murder

On September 10, during a debate at Utah Valley University, an unknown assailant shot popular right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Doctors couldn't save Kirk; the wound was too severe.

Later, US law enforcement began searching for the shooter. As the FBI said, they managed to find the murder weapon. It was a bolt-action rifle.

Already today, September 12, US President Donald Trump announced that the suspect in Kirk’s murder had been detained.
