Despite forecasts from some Western media about a possible ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia as early as this summer, it did not happen due to a lack of key conditions, says Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, in an interview with Il Foglio.
Budanov confirmed that the chance for a ceasefire exists, but it is only possible if factors align simultaneously within Ukraine, within Russia, and in allied countries that influence global decisions.
“Only the precise combination of these elements at the planned moment will produce a result. Otherwise, the war will continue,” he emphasized.
The media notes that Budanov avoided questions about US President Donald Trump’s position on ending the war in Ukraine. According to Budanov, for the US, Russia and China are global powers.
“Russia is nothing economically, but it has military strength. China is both, an economic and a military power,” Budanov said.
Peace talks
Earlier, The Washington Post, citing its own sources, reported that during a conversation with US President Donald Trump, Russian president Vladimir Putin allegedly showed he was ready to make certain concessions to end the war.
According to unofficial information, Putin reportedly mentioned the possibility of withdrawing Russian troops from the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions in exchange for full control over the Donetsk region.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy clearly emphasized that there would be no territorial gifts or exchanges in Russia’s favor, including regarding the Donetsk region.
Zelenskyy also noted that he supports ending hostilities based on the current frontline.
According to him, there is still a chance for a diplomatic resolution, but Russia is trying to evade real agreements.
