On Sunday, February 23, Germany held early elections to the Bundestag. The winner of this election cycle was the conservative CDU/CSU alliance, while other parties received fewer votes or even failed to make it, German media reported.

According to the vote count, the Christian Democrats' CDU/CSU bloc has a majority. The second was the far-right Alternative for Germany, which won in virtually all former GDR states. The third place went to the Social Democratic Party of Olaf Scholz.

The Green Party (Grüne) and the Left Party (Linke) also entered the Bundestag, tying for 4th and 5th place.

Other parties, such as the Free Democratic Party and the Union of Sarah Wagenknecht, did not make it, failing to pass the 5% threshold.

According to Tagesschau, summarizing the official data, the figures are as follows:

  • CDU/CSU bloc - 28.6%;
  • AfD - 20.8%;
  • SPD - 16.4%;
  • The Greens - 11.6%;
  • The Left - 8.8%.

Other parties had less than 5%.

How many MPs will there be from each party

There is no fixed number of MPs in the German parliament (Bundestag), as their number depends on the electoral system.

After the 2021 elections, the Bundestag had 736 members, a record number. However, in 2025, a reform came into effect that limits the maximum number of seats to 630.

According to ARD's forecast, which was made before the final vote count, 629 out of 630 possible MPs will be elected to the parliament. By party, the distribution is as follows:

  • CDU/CSU - 208 seats;
  • AfD - 151 seats;
  • SPD - 121;
  • The Greens - 85;
  • The Left - 64.
