Bad breath can cause discomfort for both the person and those around them, according to the Ukrainian therapist Mykhailo Tsiurak.

Why bad breath can occur

In medical terms, bad breath is called halitosis, which can be either physiological or pathological.

Physiological causes of halitosis

  • Morning breath after sleep is a normal occurrence and usually goes away after brushing your teeth;
  • Smoking;
  • Excessive alcohol consumption;
  • Eating "aromatic" foods such as garlic, onions, etc.

Pathological causes of halitosis

  • Oral diseases: tooth decay, gum disease (periodontitis), stomatitis, chronic tonsillitis, malignant tumors in a state of decay;
  • Respiratory diseases: chronic sinusitis, bronchiectasis, lung tumors;
  • Digestive diseases: gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophageal or stomach tumors, liver failure due to cirrhosis;
  • Kidney diseases: kidney failure in its final stages.

How to get rid of bad breath on your own

  • Thorough brushing of teeth, cleaning between teeth with dental floss, and elimination caries;
  • Stopping smoking and reducing consumption of garlic, onions, etc.;
  • Drinking an adequate amount of fluids;
  • Chewing sugar-free mint gum (increases saliva production and freshens breath);
  • Quitting smoking
