Causes of autumn hair loss and how to avoid it: Doctor's advice
Hair on a person's head is in different stages of its life cycle at any given time. Normally, up to 100 hairs can fall out each day. Increased hair loss can occur during the autumn period, according to Ukrainian endocrinologist Olesia Pidmurniak.
Causes of autumn hair loss
The doctor identified 5 main causes of autumn hair loss:
- Vitamin D and iron deficiency
- Severe or chronic stress
- Exacerbation of chronic gastrointestinal and thyroid gland diseases
- Hormonal imbalance
- Decreased immune system function
According to the expert, normally up to 100 hairs fall out per day, but during the autumn and spring periods, hair loss can increase to up to 200 hairs per day.
What to eat to prevent hair loss
To avoid seasonal hair loss, it's beneficial to include the following foods in your diet:
- Pumpkin, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach
- Almonds, pumpkin and sunflower seeds
- Seafood, fish
- Eggs, cheese, natural yogurt
- Beef, lamb
- Grains, oatmeal, buckwheat, millet
- Olive and flaxseed oils
- Dark chocolate
For treating hair loss, Vitamin D, folic acid, and B vitamins are commonly used. Other vitamins (A, C, E, and B vitamins) are also important for maintaining the hair follicle life cycle, and deficiencies can lead to both brittleness and hair loss.
Hair care
Proper hair care in the autumn can help prevent brittleness and hair loss. Hair care products should be suitable for your skin type. If you experience itching or redness after washing your hair, it's necessary to switch shampoos.
For styling, use a soft brush and heat protection products for your hair.
Dry your hair with a blow dryer in gentle settings (at a medium air temperature), and minimize the use of straightening and curling tools to avoid drying out the hair.
