Cardiologist G. Suntar Kanaganayagam revealed which foods to avoid if you want to maintain good heart health. Some foods have a very negative impact on overall well-being, according to Daily Express.

Foods to refrain from

According to the cardiologist, it is advisable for heart health to steer clear of products that are high in salt and sugar. It is also important not to overindulge in dishes with excessive fat content.

"As a cardiologist, I tend to avoid foods that are high in unhealthy fats, sodium, and added sugars. This includes processed foods such as fast food, processed meats (e.g. bacon, chorizo), and packaged snacks, as well as sugary drinks," said the doctor.

The cardiologist himself abstains from consuming meat altogether. According to him, if he were not a vegetarian, he would still avoid certain types of meat and dairy products.

"I am vegetarian but if not, I would steer clear of excessive consumption of red meat and full-fat dairy products, as they are high in saturated fat and trans fats. A diet high in saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes," added the cardiologist.

Why these foods are harmful to the cardiovascular system

According to the cardiologist, foods high in unhealthy fats affect cholesterol levels, leading to the accumulation of fat deposits in the arteries, significantly increasing the risk of heart diseases and strokes.

Excessive salt content negatively impact blood pressure, thereby increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Foods with a high sugar content can lead to weight gain and adversely affect heart function, potentially leading to diabetes.
