The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has announced suspicion against a Russian soldier who shot and killed two Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers before being captured by Ukrainian forces, according to the Telegram channels of the SSU and the Office of the Prosecutor General.

According to reports, investigators and military counterintelligence officers of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) have uncovered war crimes committed by a Russian soldier currently being held captive by Ukraine's Defense Forces.

Based on SSU materials, on January 9 of this year, he, along with accomplices, executed two captured Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers during fighting in the Kursk direction.

However, two days after the killing, the Russian sabotage and reconnaissance group (DRG) was located and attacked by Ukrainian Special Operations Forces. As a result of the clash, the enemy unit was partially destroyed, and the suspect was taken prisoner.

The investigation identified the detainee as a rifleman from the 40th Separate Marine Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces.

During the investigative actions, he attempted to conceal the fact of his crime, but SSU officers collected substantial evidence of his guilt.

It was established that both Ukrainian soldiers had been captured by the Russians following a firefight with the Russian DRG, which had covertly approached the forward positions of Ukraine’s Defense Forces.

After temporarily seizing a dugout, the Russian military led the captured Ukrainian soldiers into an open area and shot them in the back with assault rifles. Both soldiers died at the scene from the gunfire.

SSU investigators have officially charged the Russian soldier under Part 1 of Article 28 and Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (war crimes as defined by Articles 3 and 130 of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, combined with the intentional killing committed by a group of persons). The suspect faces life imprisonment.

As a reminder, we previously reported that the Security Service of Ukraine identified Russian commanders who ordered the beheading of a captured Ukrainian soldier. They have been charged in absentia.
