Many people believe that frequent hair washing damages hair and can cause hair loss. In reality, however, how often you should wash your hair depends on your scalp type and the choice of the right shampoo, says Ukrainian trichologist Oksana Varlamova.

Why it’s important to choose shampoo based on scalp type

According to the expert, hair consists of two parts: the living part (the follicle located in the dermis) and the non-living part—the hair strand itself. Care for each part differs accordingly.

"We select shampoos based on scalp type. The scalp is alive and can change. The skin is a hormone-dependent organ, and it also changes. That’s why shampoo is about scalp hygiene," the specialist explained.

The hair strand itself cannot become oily, so it requires masks, conditioners, balms, or oils.

When to change shampoo

The doctor points out that teenagers require special attention.

"Mothers often bring in 13- to 14-year-old children with dandruff or unpleasant hair odor. And they’re still washing their hair once a week with children’s shampoo. When a child begins puberty, hair care should be switched from children’s to adult shampoo," the trichologist said.

According to her, children’s shampoos are too mild and cannot properly cleanse the scalp’s sebum.

The specialist emphasized that washing hair once a week is not enough.

"You can wash it daily, but it must be a high-quality, proper shampoo. If there is a tendency for oily hair, then a sebum-regulating shampoo is needed, which will cleanse and soothe the scalp," Varlamova concluded.
