Burger vs hot dog: Which is better for your health?

Burger vs hot dog: Which is better for your health? What's healthier – hamburgers or hot dogs (collage: RBC-Ukraine)

At first glance, hamburgers and hot dogs are just fast food, not associated with healthy eating. But if you compare these two popular items, one may be less harmful -and even healthier - if prepared properly. NBC News explains which is the better choice: a hamburger or a hot dog.

Hamburger: More protein and vegetables

A classic hamburger usually consists of a bun, beef patty, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and sauces. Its main advantage is a high protein content (thanks to the meat) and vegetables that provide fiber and vitamins. If you choose a lean patty, whole-grain bun, and limit the sauces, a hamburger can be a well-balanced meal.

Hot dog: Less benefit, more risks

A hot dog consists of a sausage, white bread, and, at best, a small amount of condiments. Sausages are processed meats high in salt, preservatives, and fat. Moreover, traditional hot dogs contain almost no vegetables, and the bun is usually made from white flour.

What the experts say

If you choose between a hamburger and a hot dog, nutritionists emphasize that the hamburger is the better option, provided the ingredients are high-quality. It contains more protein, healthy fats, and fiber. On the other hand, regular consumption of hot dogs can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and obesity.

How to make fast food healthier

  • Choose lean meat or a plant-based patty
  • Add more vegetables: lettuce, tomatoes, onions
  • Avoid mayonnaise and sugary sauces, and opt for mustard or yogurt-based sauces instead
  • Choose whole-grain buns
