Borrell calls for no restrictions on Ukraine's use of weapons to strike Russia
The EU's top diplomat, Josep Borrell, urges partner countries not to limit Ukraine in its use of provided weaponry. This includes strikes against Russia, citing il Messaggero and Tagesschau.
Borrell made the statement while welcoming Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in Brussels at an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers.
"Restrictions on the use of weapons provided to Ukraine should be lifted, and full use should be permitted to strike military targets in Russia in accordance with international rules," Borrell said.
The EU chief diplomat also called on European countries to provide more military aid to Ukraine and expressed concern over reports of potential aid cuts in Germany.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, is visiting Brussels today, August 29, to participate in an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers.
The discussions in Brussels will focus on military aid and strengthening Ukraine's air defenses. The ministers will also discuss Ukraine's EU accession, the advancement of the peace formula, and the second peace summit.
Weapon use restrictions
Earlier this spring, it became known that partner countries allowed Ukraine to use provided weaponry for strikes on military targets in Russia. However, some partners, notably the United States and Germany, imposed restrictions. Ukraine has been permitted to use Western weapons for strikes in Russia's border areas.
Ukraine is calling for the removal of these restrictions, arguing that this would help prevent future Russian attacks and reduce its offensive capabilities.
This week, Andrii Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, and Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, will visit the United States. According to CNN, they will be requesting the lifting of restrictions on strikes against Russia with long-range missiles.
