Black mold in the bathroom not only ruins the appearance of the room but also quickly spreads to grout lines and other damp surfaces. You can get rid of it without expensive products.

RBC-Ukraine shares effective tips that have helped households save money and time and again.

Keep it simple

For small spots on hard surfaces, you can use 3% hydrogen peroxide.

Apply it directly to the affected area, leave it for about 10 minutes, then clean the surface with a brush or sponge and wipe it dry.

Another affordable option is baking soda. Mix it with a small amount of water to make a thick paste. Apply it to the spots, leave it for a few minutes, scrub with a brush, and rinse.

For lighter contamination

Dish soap + warm water.

This works well as a first cleaning step, especially if there is soap scum or grease on the surface. On its own, it is not a reliable way to kill mold, but it helps remove surface dirt.

Laundry detergent or a regular cleaning product works similarly.

First, clean the surface mechanically, then dry it thoroughly.

Be sure to ventilate the room while cleaning and wear gloves. However, do not experiment by using different products at the same time. It is especially dangerous to mix chlorine-based products with vinegar, acids or ammonia.

Mechanical cleaning is very important regardless of which product you use. Mold should not simply be “sprayed” — it needs to be physically removed from the surface.

Keep in mind that if mold has appeared on silicone sealant and penetrated inside it, simply wiping the surface may only provide a temporary solution. In such cases, the affected sealant often needs to be completely removed and replaced.

The key is to keep it from coming back

One cleaning is not enough if the bathroom is constantly damp. After showering, wipe water droplets off the tiles and other surfaces, do not leave wet towels lying around for too long, and ventilate the room regularly.

Also check the ventilation. If air circulation is poor, moisture remains on the walls and ceiling for longer, creating favorable conditions for mold to return.

If black spots quickly reappear, cover a large area or there are signs of a leak, it is better to look for the cause rather than simply wash the surface again and again. Sometimes the problem is hidden behind the tiles, under the sealant or in the ventilation system.

For a small patch, the main rule is simple: clean the surface, dry it thoroughly and eliminate the constant source of moisture. This will help keep your bathroom clean for longer without constantly spending money on expensive products.
