Biden wins primaries in North Dakota
Current US President Joe Biden has won the Democratic Party's presidential primaries in North Dakota, according to The Hill.
According to the forecast of the Decision Desk headquarters, 92.4% of voters supported the president. Biden mathematically secured the nomination from the Democratic Party earlier this month, and this victory will increase his overall number of delegates.
In North Dakota, where the primaries were conducted almost entirely by mail-in voting, 13 delegates are at stake.
The Hill reminded that Biden lost the state during the 2020 Democratic nominating process to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). The state is reliably red and voted for former President Trump in both the 2016 and 2020 general elections by significant margins.
Biden was the only major candidate on the ballot in the primary, but he did face opposition from minor candidates like author Marianne Williamson and entrepreneur Jason Palmer.
President Donald Trump, the main rival of the incumbent president, won the Republican Party's presidential primaries in North Dakota on March 4, taking all 29 delegates.
What are primaries
The term primaries refers to a type of election where the party's candidate is chosen. The winner of the party's internal election later competes against candidates from other parties in the general election.
The purpose of internal elections is to prevent candidates from the same party from stealing votes from each other in the general election, as their electorate is usually similar in sympathies.
In the US, the first primaries were held in 1842. Florida was the first state to adopt a primary election law in 1901.
Until 1936, primaries were held in only nine states, but later they began to be held in most states.
Various voting systems and multi-stage schemes are used to count the votes. In 11 states in the US, caucuses are held instead of primaries.
Presidential elections in the US
The 2024 US presidential election will take place on November 5, 2024. According to forecasts and the results of previous primaries, the main candidate from the Democrats will be the incumbent American leader, Joe Biden, and from the Republicans, Donald Trump.
On March 23, Biden and Trump won the primaries in Louisiana.
At the end of February, Trump and Biden won their primaries in Michigan. However, Biden faced problems: about 100,000 voters chose the undecided option on the ballot.
Meanwhile, Biden, for the first time since August last year, has surpassed Trump in opinion polls.
