Biden states that ceasefire in Gaza remains possible
US President Joe Biden has stated that a ceasefire in Gaza remains possible, despite ongoing exchanges of accusations between Israel and Hamas, reports The Times of Israel.
Reportedly, Biden told journalists after the weekend at his residence in Camp David that negotiations are still ongoing and that we are not giving up. He added that an agreement is still possible.
Peace negotiations on Gaza
Biden's statement came amid US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to Tel Aviv, marking his ninth trip to Israel since October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an incursion into the country. The high-ranking official arrived to push for a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages.
Before this, two days of negotiations were held in Doha, which were reportedly successful. However, Hamas refused to participate.
Regarding the accusations, Israel and Hamas have blamed each other for obstructing a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the release of hostages.
According to mediators, the current round of talks brought both sides closer to an official pause in fighting than at any time in recent months. However, objections from both sides, made public on Sunday, have increased the likelihood of a renewed deadlock.
