Biden speaks with EU Commission president after her re-election, Ukraine among topics
US President Joe Biden spoke with Ursula von der Leyen after she was re-elected as President of the European Commission. One of the topics of conversation was Ukraine, according to the White House.
Biden congratulated Ursula von der Leyen on her re-election. According to the White House, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strong US-EU relations and to jointly addressing the world's greatest challenges.
“They also discussed support for Ukraine and efforts to hold Russia to account for its aggression,” the statement said.
Ursula von der Leyen commented on the conversation with Biden on her X account, thanking the US president for his congratulations.
"The EU and US are partners, friends and allies. We face common challenges together - in Europe, the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific," she wrote.
Elections in the EU
In June, elections to the European Parliament took place, after which the leadership of the main European institutions changed.
Ursula von der Leyen was re-elected as President of the European Commission in her second term. Her candidacy was supported by 401 MEPs. She will lead the European Commission for the next five years.
Roberta Metsola was also re-elected President of the European Parliament.
