Biden examines possibilities to close US-Mexico border on his own
US President Joe Biden has said that he and his administration are exploring whether he has the authority to unilaterally close the southern border with Mexico to migrants if deemed necessary, according to Reuters.
In an interview with Univision, Biden mentioned that since Republicans in Congress have stalled a bipartisan bill that would grant the president such authority, he's considering attempting to do it on his own.
"We're examining whether or not I have that power," Biden said, adding there was "no guarantee" he has the power without legislation.
Significance of US-Mexico border issue in relation to US military aid to Ukraine
Biden proposed allocating $106 billion to aid Ukraine and Israel through Congress. However, Senate Republicans have conditioned their support on including more stringent measures regarding border security with Mexico in the bill.
Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, remarked that the issue of aid to Ukraine can only be addressed after resolving the crisis at the Mexican border.
It was revealed at the end of January that the Senate had agreed to expand the country's authority to limit the illegal flow of migrants across the border with Mexico.
