Lineup before the race

Ukraine could field four athletes in the sprint: Dmytro Pidhrushny, Vitaliy Mandzyn, Anton Dudchenko, and Bohdan Borkovskyi.

For Pidhrushny and Mandzyn, this was their third start at the 2026 Olympics. Both contributed to Ukraine’s eighth-place finish in the mixed relay. In their first individual race – the 20 km individual – they finished in the top 30: Pidhrushny 18th, Mandzyn 28th.

Dudchenko was making his second start of these Games (he placed 35th in the individual race). For Borkovskyi, the sprint was his Olympic debut.

At previous Games, Pidhrushny held the best Ukrainian sprint result, finishing 13th in Beijing 2022, while Dudchenko was 60th.

This season, Mandzyn leads Ukraine in the World Cup sprint standings at 29th, with Borkovskyi 59th. Mandzyn’s best sprint result this season was 15th at the Oberhof stage.

How the Ukrainians skied and shot

Ukraine’s leaders faced challenges on the range: Mandzyn had one miss, Pidhrushny two, which on the short sprint course is significant.

Shooting errors prevented more competitive results. Mandzyn finished best among Ukrainians in 24th. Pidhrushny, despite two penalty loops, skied strongly and finished 27th, just over a minute behind the winner.

On the positive side, both Mandzyn and Pidhrushny qualified for the pursuit race.

Borkovskyi narrowly missed the top 60, finishing 63rd, while Dudchenko ended 88th out of 90.

Sprint winner

The victory went to France’s Quentin Fillon Maillet, who hit all targets and posted the fastest time on the course – 22:53.1.

Silver and bronze went to Norwegians Vetle Christiansen and Sturla Laegreid.

After the second shooting, Fillon Maillet trailed teammate Emilien Jacquelin but overtook his rivals on the final lap. Jacquelin ultimately dropped to fourth.
