Robberies are among the most discussed crimes in the world, especially when it comes to heists worth millions of dollars. Each of these cases is remarkable for its sophistication and scale, with the robbers becoming legends in the criminal world.
RBC-Ukraine reports on some of the largest robberies that stand out for their scale and ingenuity.
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum robbery (USA)
In 1990, one of the most significant cultural crimes took place in Boston. Two criminals, disguised as police officers, entered the museum and stole 13 irreplaceable items, including works by renowned artists like Rembrandt and Vermeer. The value of the stolen art is estimated at over $300 million.
This case became one of the most mysterious in criminal history. For decades, neither the robbers nor the stolen exhibits have been found. The museum has still not been able to recover its collection, and the case remains unsolved. International investigations yielded no results, and the crime became a myth in the art world.
Harry Winston Jewelry robbery (France)
In 2009, one of the most unusual robberies took place in Paris. Four women, dressed in stylish dresses, entered the Harry Winston jewelry store.
They stole jewels worth 80 million euros, and did so so quickly that most witnesses didn't even understand what had happened. This group of robbers was part of the famous criminal organization "Pink Panther."
The robbery caused a huge public stir and became a symbol of the criminals' sophistication. Law enforcement stated that the robbers had high-level skills and precise knowledge of operations.

Schiphol Airport robbery (Netherlands)
In 2005, a massive theft of precious stones took place at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. A group of criminals, using stolen uniforms and a vehicle, entered the airport grounds. They stole diamonds worth about $118 million, making this one of the largest robberies in the world.
The criminals acted with the calmness of professionals and managed to escape without leaving a trace. This caused a great stir and raised doubts about security at airports worldwide.
Dar es-Salaam Bank robbery (Iraq)
In 2007, another high-profile robbery occurred in Baghdad, when criminals stole $282 million from the Dar es-Salaam Bank. The attack was carried out by an organized group that managed to deceive the bank's security system.
This case shocked the authorities, as the amount stolen was colossal for the region. The robbers used forged documents and managed to smuggle the money out of the country, leaving few traces. The investigation dragged on for years, and the bank suffered significant financial losses.
