People with pollen allergies experience one of the worst times of the year in spring, when many plants are blooming, and the rains only intensify this process, Marca reports.

Non-medical ways to avoid allergies

One of the most effective strategies is avoiding contact with allergens. As much as possible, try to stay indoors, especially during peak pollen times and on windy days. Maintaining proper hygiene and keeping your home clean and dust-free is also essential. Use vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters, change curtains and bed linens regularly, and reduce dust accumulation.

Ventilating the house is still important, but it's best to do so for a short time around midday, when pollen levels are typically lower.

It’s also recommended to avoid drying clothes outdoors, as pollen can stick to fabrics and be brought inside.

Wearing a mask outdoors can provide additional protection for the respiratory system. Personal hygiene practices, like frequent hand and face washing, help remove pollen that may have adhered to the skin.

Other ways to manage allergy symptoms

While non-medical measures can reduce exposure and discomfort, medication remains the standard treatment for seasonal allergies.

Antihistamines are commonly used to relieve symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and a runny nose. Nasal corticosteroids are also popular for reducing inflammation and easing nasal congestion.

Decongestants may also be used to relieve blocked sinuses, but they should be taken occasionally and not for extended periods.
