Belgium questions US reliability as ally under Trump's policies — FT

The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has drafted an internal document stating that, under Donald Trump's presidency, the US is no longer a reliable ally, according to the Financial Times.
The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has developed a strategy to calibrate its interactions with Washington to protect the country's interests while avoiding the reputation of being a hostile state.
The document was prepared by the Department for the Americas and the Caribbean in late 2025.
It calls for a thorough reassessment of relations between the European Union and Belgium on the one hand, and the United States on the other, and notes that the current dynamics in the United States could jeopardize a number of critically important interests of Belgium and the EU.
However, the country believes that engaging with the current US administration is necessary. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends establishing contacts with the leadership of Republican and Democratic states and the mayors of major cities.
The document recommends continuing negotiations with the Democratic opposition, establishing contacts with the US Congress, and identifying new generations of nonpartisan elites who could play an important role in the future of America.
It also states that the Trump administration views the purchase of American weapons favorably, but recommends that the country increase its procurement of European military equipment.
A spokesperson for the Belgian Foreign Ministry states that the document is internal working material and that its content should be distinguished from an officially approved political strategy.
According to a study, an increasing number of citizens in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Canada do not consider the US a reliable ally and doubt that the United States defends democracy or shares their values.
