The road to Hollywood for many celebrities didn’t start with luxurious contracts, but with vans, cheap rooms, shelters, and a constant struggle for the basics.

RBC-Ukraine collected stories of stars who went through very hard times before the whole world knew about them.

Chris Pratt

Today, Chris Pratt is associated with major franchises, multimillion-dollar paychecks, and the status of one of Hollywood’s most successful actors. But his life used to be very different.

Before fame, Pratt lived in an old van on Maui, surviving through odd jobs.

He worked as a waiter, covering only his basic needs, while spending the rest of his time at the beach and surfing.

It was during this period that actress and director Rae Dawn Chong noticed him, and this chance encounter eventually opened the doors to his film career.

Halle Berry

At the start of her career, Halle Berry moved to New York, hoping to break into the industry.

However, she quickly faced harsh realities: money ran out, and there was no one to turn to for help.

As a result, the future Oscar winner spent some time living in a homeless shelter.

Later, she recalled that this difficult period toughened her character and taught her to fight until the end.

Ultimately, this perseverance helped her make history as the first Black actress to win an Oscar for Best Actress. Before fame: 5 actors who went from poverty to Hollywood success

Jim Carrey

As a teenager, Jim Carrey also faced a serious family crisis. After his father lost his job, the family found themselves in a very difficult situation.

For a time, they lived in a Volkswagen camper, moving from place to place in Ontario.

To help the family, Jim worked in a factory alongside his brothers and sisters.

The actor has said many times that the poverty and stress of those years largely shaped his sense of humor.

Even then, he never gave up on his big dream — and eventually, it truly came true.

Daniel Craig

Even before playing James Bond, Daniel Craig lived very modestly and struggled for years to establish himself in the profession.

Early in his acting career, he lacked money so much that he sometimes spent nights sleeping on benches in London parks.

During this period, Craig attended classes, went to auditions, and worked in bars and restaurants to cover at least part of his expenses.

These years became a real school of endurance for him — and perhaps that’s why he later convincingly portrayed the tough, grounded Agent 007.

Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone’s story has become almost legendary. Before the success of Rocky, he was in such dire straits that he had to sell his dog just to afford food.

At the time, the actor lived in a cheap room, spent a lot of time in libraries just to stay warm, and kept writing scripts despite constant rejections.

When the Rocky script was finally purchased, one of the first things he did was buy back his dog.

This story later became one of the most famous symbols of the price that success sometimes comes at.
