BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023: List of nominees
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023 shortlist has been announced, featuring six prominent athletes from various sports vying for the prestigious award. The winner will be decided by public vote during a live show on December 19, hosted in Media City, Salford, according to BBC.
This year, the contenders for the main award are cricketer Stuart Broad, jockey Frankie Dettori, footballer Mary Earps, wheelchair tennis player Alfie Hewett, athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson, and golfer Rory Mcllroy. The event will be presented by Clare Balding, Gary Lineker, Gabby Logan, and Alex Scott.
In 2022, Lioness star Beth Mead was awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year title, followed by England's Test cricket captain Ben Stokes in second place and British curler Eve Muirhead securing the third position.
Besides the main award, there are several more nominations, namely:
- World Sport Star of the Year;
- Helen Rollason Award;
- Young Sports Personality of the Year;
- Unsung Hero;
- Coach of the Year;
- Team of the Year;
- Lifetime Achievement Award.
This year's Sports Personality of the Year award panel includes notable sports personalities, journalists, and representatives of the BBC and UK Sport.
Stuart Broad
Stuart Broad concluded his cricket career with a storybook ending. Announcing his retirement after the fifth Ashes Test, he hit a six in his final at-bat and clinched the match's last wicket, securing England's win.

Broad's series saw him overtake Ian Botham as the top wicket-taker against Australia, ending with 604 Test wickets, ranking fifth overall and second among fast bowlers. He's also among the rare group to score over 3000 runs and take 300 wickets in Test cricket.
Frankie Dettori
Frankie Dettori captured major wins in his final racing year in the UK, including the 2000 Guineas on Chaldean and the Oaks on Soul Sister. His victories also encompassed the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and the Coronation Cup at Epsom.

His last UK race, Champions Day at Ascot, saw him triumph on King Of Steel in the Champion Stakes.
Mary Earps
Goalkeeper Mary Earps stood out for England in their first Women's World Cup final. Playing every minute and conceding four goals, she won the Golden Glove and was named England Women's Player of the Year, finishing fifth in the Ballon d'Or.

She was pivotal in England's Women's Finalissima victory and won the Women's Super League Golden Glove with Manchester United.
Alfie Hewett
Alfie Hewett had an extraordinary 2023, winning seven singles tournaments, including the Australian and US Opens. His victories in the Wheelchair Singles Masters earned him the world's number-one spot.

He and Gordon Reid won three Grand Slam titles in doubles, increasing their Major tally to 18. Hewett was also crucial in Great Britain's World Team Cup win.
Katarina Johnson-Thompson
Katarina Johnson-Thompson clinched her second heptathlon World Championship in a close contest, beating Anna Hall by 20 points.

She rebounded from an Achilles injury with personal bests in the long jump, javelin, and 800m, underlining her triumphant return.
Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy redeemed himself at this year's Ryder Cup after a tough 2021, leading as the top points scorer and contributing to Europe's victory.

On the PGA Tour, he achieved 13 top-10 finishes in 18 events and reclaimed the Race to Dubai title, spending part of the year as the world number one.
BBC Sports Personality
This year commemorates the 70th anniversary of the most prestigious awards show in sports, which began in 1954, with Chris Chataway being honored as the inaugural winner. Over the past seven decades, it has become a significant event in the sporting calendar, celebrating the outstanding achievements of athletes and sports personalities.
