The legendary television presenter Sir David Attenborough has just celebrated his 100th birthday, remaining a symbol of energy and sharp intellect, according to WalesOnline.
The secret of David Attenborough’s diet
He attributes his impressive longevity not only to active work, but also to an important dietary change he introduced several years ago, which doctors recommend millions of people follow.
Back in 2017, Attenborough began gradually giving up red meat. Although he did not become a strict vegetarian and continues to eat fish and cheese, Sir David admits that his diet has become “much more plant-based” than he could have imagined before.
The naturalist eliminated beef, pork, and lamb from his menu, which, according to scientists, significantly reduces the strain on the cardiovascular system.
Why giving up red meat extends life
Scientific research supports the logic of this choice. Excess consumption of red and processed meat is associated with high levels of saturated fats, which increase bad cholesterol.
Experts from the Harvard School of Public Health note that replacing just one daily serving of meat with fish or poultry can reduce the risk of premature death by 7–19%.
In addition to heart health, such a diet also helps avoid serious intestinal problems. The NHS warns that a high amount of red meat in the diet increases the risk of colon cancer.
That is why switching to lighter protein sources is becoming a key factor in maintaining health after the age of 50.
How to change your diet safely
Experts emphasize that if you decide to follow Attenborough’s example, it is important not just to eliminate foods but to find proper replacements. The body must receive enough protein and vitamins from other sources, such as:
- Fresh fish and seafood
- Poultry (chicken, turkey)
- Low-fat dairy products
- Legumes and nuts
Despite his advanced age, Sir David Attenborough continues working on documentary series, reminding us that a combination of healthy eating and constant intellectual activity is the best investment in the future.
However, doctors advise always consulting a physician before making radical dietary changes to ensure a proper balance of essential nutrients.
