Mulled wine is considered one of the most popular Christmas drinks, but experts warn it may have undesirable health effects, especially for older adults.

Daily Express explains why this wine-based beverage should be avoided.

Why mulled wine may not be the best choice

British experts point out that the main risks of mulled wine concern oral health.

Dentist Minu Gamari explains that despite its pleasant taste and warming effect, mulled wine is not the best choice for teeth.

The drink is usually made from red wine, which can stain tooth enamel if consumed regularly. In addition, sugar or honey is often added, increasing sugar content and raising the risk of cavities.

Another factor is alcohol, which reduces saliva production. Saliva plays a key role in neutralizing acids and cleaning the mouth of food residues. A dry mouth creates a favorable environment for cavities and gum disease.

For these reasons, doctors recommend enjoying mulled wine in moderation, especially for people with sensitive teeth or gum problems.

Experts also warn about household risks. A kitchen expert advises against pouring mulled wine down the sink. Holiday drinks with spices, sugar, or creamy additives can cause pipe blockages and unpleasant odors.

“What seems harmless when warm and liquid behaves differently in pipes. Fats solidify, residues stick to the walls, and hot water only moves the problem further, where it cools and hardens,” explains the expert.

This can result in serious clogs requiring professional intervention. Specialists emphasize that prevention is far easier and cheaper than repairs.

During the holidays, it’s worth remembering: moderation with mulled wine is beneficial not only for your health but also for maintaining a comfortable home.
