Armenia's president appoints new prime minister

Nikol Pashinyan has retained his position as Armenia's head of government. After the constitutional procedure was completed, the country's president officially appointed him prime minister, according to the Armenian president.
Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan appointed Nikol Pashinyan prime minister under Article 149, Part 1 of the country's Constitution.
Earlier, the Armenian service of Radio Svoboda reported that the Civil Contract party, which holds a majority in the National Assembly, had nominated its leader, Nikol Pashinyan, for the post of prime minister.
The political party said it had already submitted to the Armenian president the documents required for the constitutional procedure to appoint the head of government.
Under Armenia's Constitution, once a newly elected parliament begins its term, the president must immediately appoint as prime minister the candidate nominated by the parliamentary majority.
Earlier, Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan accepted the resignation of the government, which Pashinyan submitted at the start of the first session of the newly elected parliament. The procedure is a constitutional requirement following the start of a new term of the National Assembly.
