Detailed images of mockups and schematics of Apple’s first foldable smartphone, expected to be named iPhone Ultra, have appeared online. The leak surfaced just hours before the start of Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2026), according to an insider post by Sonny Dickson on the social network X.

The released materials confirm several key changes in Apple’s approach to building its first “book-style” foldable device and a smartphone prototype that may even replace a tablet.

Key features

Unified color. Sources claim the company has decided to abandon black and will release the first generation of its foldable smartphone exclusively in white. The goal is reportedly to simplify logistics and manufacturing.

New selfie camera format. On the internal display, there is a perfectly circular cutout for the front camera, similar to Android smartphones. This will be the first such implementation in Apple’s history.

External screen design. Regarding the cutout on the outer display, the data varies: early schematics showed a circular window, while more recent drawings suggest a compact Dynamic Island integration similar to that of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro.

Despite expectations that Touch ID might return via the power button, engineers are most likely to keep Face ID facial recognition for both displays.

Technical specifications

The official announcement of the iPhone Ultra is scheduled for September this year, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Although the device is Apple’s first experiment in this segment, analysts predict that it will surpass all Android-based foldable competitors in sales.

According to engineering data, the device will feature a 5.5-inch external display and a large 7.8-inch internal flexible display. The smartphone is expected to run on Apple’s latest A20 Pro chip, manufactured using a 2-nanometer process.

Insiders also report that the new device will feature the largest battery in iPhone history, although the exact capacity has not yet been disclosed.

The main camera will be dual — developers have decided to omit a telephoto lens in the first generation of the device.

Hybrid operating system: what to expect from the WWDC presentation

Although the smartphone itself will be unveiled in the fall, experts do not rule out that Apple will showcase the first software developments at WWDC 2026 during the presentation of its new operating system.

A special software modification is being developed for the foldable device, which will be a hybrid of iOS and iPadOS. This architecture will allow the interface to intuitively adapt to changes in screen orientation and position.

The main feature of the system will be automatic app scaling. Apps that were not originally designed for foldable screens will be able to expand correctly and without visual glitches on the large 7.8-inch display.
