Apple agrees with OpenAI to implement ChatGPT in iPhone - Bloomberg
Apple Inc. has agreed with OpenAI regarding using the startup's technology in the iPhone. This agreement is part of Apple's initiative to integrate artificial intelligence features into its devices, Bloomberg reported.
According to Bloomberg sources, both parties are finalizing the contract terms to incorporate ChatGPT features into iOS 18, the upcoming operating system for the iPhone.
Apple has also been in talks with Google Alphabet Inc. to license the chatbot Gemini developed by the company. While these negotiations have not yet resulted in an agreement, they are ongoing.
The deal with OpenAI will enable Apple to offer the popular chatbot as part of new artificial intelligence features it plans to announce next month. However, there is currently no guarantee that the agreement will be announced in the near term.
Apple aims to make waves in artificial intelligence in June during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. According to Bloomberg, the company will launch some of its future AI features through data centers equipped with its processors.
Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook mentioned using ChatGPT personally but noted "a number of issues that need to be sorted." He promised that new AI features would be introduced in Apple products on a "very thoughtful basis."
During Apple's earnings call last week, Cook emphasized that Apple will have an advantage in AI.
"We believe in the transformative power and promise of AI, and we believe we have advantages that will differentiate us in this new era, including Apple's unique combination of seamless hardware, software and services integration," Cook said.
Recall that at the end of April, Apple resumed negotiations with OpenAI regarding the use of artificial intelligence technology to implement a range of new features that will be introduced in the iPhone later this year.
