What the scientists’ discovery is about
Scientists conducted a meta-analysis of 29 randomized controlled studies involving nearly 4,000 people. The results confirmed that regular intake of omega-3 fatty acids reduces aggression levels on average by 28%.
Why this is important
Works for everyone
The effect was observed in people of different ages (from children to the elderly) and genders, regardless of whether they had been prone to aggression before.
Types of aggression
Omega-3 reduces both reactive aggression (an immediate reaction to provocation) and “proactive” aggression (planned aggressive behavior).
How omega-3 works
Researchers suggest that omega-3 is crucial for the structure and functioning of the brain. It reduces inflammatory processes in the central nervous system, which helps stabilize mood and improve cognitive functions.
“At the very least, parents seeking treatment for an aggressive child should know that in addition to any other treatment that their child receives, an extra portion or two of fish each week could also help,” the study authors note.
Although omega-3 is not a magic pill for all psychological problems, scientists recommend considering it as a safe and accessible tool for improving mental health.
