'America is not abandoning Ukraine': Schumer flies to Ukraine to pledge $60 billion in aid
Senate majority Democratic leader Chuck Schumer is heading to Ukraine to persuade President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other officials that Congress will indeed provide Ukraine with a $60 billion aid package, according to Associated Press.
The agency notes that Schumer's unexpected trip comes at a dangerous time for Ukraine. Zelenskyy has said that delays in aid from the US and other Western countries create an opportunity for Russia to make gains on the battlefield, as Ukrainian forces are running low on ammunition and weaponry.
Lawmakers from both parties traveled to Europe last week to promise that the United States will not abandon Ukraine and other European allies. However, the way forward is not clear-cut. Last week, the Senate passed a $95 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, but House Republican spokesman Mike Johnson has yet to schedule the package for a vote.
In an interview before his trip, Schumer said he plans to tell Ukrainian officials that "we’re going to win this fight, and America is not abandoning them."
