Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, has responded to the statement by the Prime Minister of the German state of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer, regarding the potential abandonment of occupied territories for the sake of a ceasefire with Russia. He believes that these words will be perceived in the Kremlin as a sign of weakness.

The ambassador emphasized that instead of giving up territories, Ukrainians have chosen to fight for freedom and peace.

"Russia will perceive your words as a sign of weakness. Would you agree to territorial concessions if it were about Saxony?" Makeiev asked Kretschmer.

Backstory

The Prime Minister of the German state of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer, stated that Ukraine needs to accept the temporary loss of territories for the sake of a ceasefire with Russia.

Kretschmer believes that the German government should not only supply weapons to Ukraine but also engage in diplomatic initiatives and that allies should try to influence Putin and facilitate a ceasefire.

"Perhaps, for a ceasefire, Ukraine may initially need to accept the temporary loss of control over some territories. Not a single square meter of Ukrainian territory has become Russian. But, as in other major wars, the time has come for a final decision," said the Prime Minister of Saxony.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has already responded to Kretschmer's calls, saying that "if Ukraine accepts the temporary loss of territories, Russian forces will become closer to Germany and Saxony in particular. By the way, Putin is well acquainted with this region from his time in service near Dresden."
