The melamine sponge is often bought for the kitchen, but its uses go far beyond that. It can be a real cleaning game-changer when used properly.
Styler explains what you can clean with a melamine sponge and where it truly comes in handy.
Stains disappear before your eyes
A melamine sponge is a specialized foam sponge that acts as a very fine abrasive. It helps erase grime without the need for large amounts of detergent – simply dampen the sponge and gently rub the surface.
White sneaker soles
Dark scuffs and dirt marks on the rubber part of shoes can be gently rubbed with a damp melamine sponge. Afterwards, wipe the surface with a clean, damp cloth.
Walls
If you have scuff marks from hands, shoes, or furniture on a light painted wall, the sponge can help remove them. However, always test it on an inconspicuous area first, as it may damage the finish.
Plastic window sills
Dark streaks, scuffs, and other stains on white plastic often respond well to a melamine sponge.
Light switches and doors
These surfaces quickly accumulate fingerprints. The sponge helps remove dirt without large amounts of cleaning products.

It's useful beyond just the home
Pencil and marker marks
On hard, smooth surfaces, a melamine sponge can help remove children's "artwork." As always, test it on a small, inconspicuous area first.
Black scuff marks on floors
Shoe or furniture marks on some hard flooring can be gently rubbed with a damp sponge. Don't press too hard to avoid damaging the surface.
Plastic items
Containers, plastic furniture, and other hard objects with scuffs can be cleaned this way as well.
Important note
The melamine sponge works as a very fine abrasive, so use it with care. Avoid using it on varnished, glossy, delicate, or easily scratched surfaces. Also, it's best not to apply harsh chemicals to the sponge – in many cases, simply wetting it with water is enough.
