Children form their attitudes toward themselves and the world through the words of adults. Short but warm and supportive phrases can become “magic keys” to their confidence.

Which phrases parents should use more often to help their child feel confident was explained by Olena Dorohavtseva, a psychologist and art therapist at the Mental Recovery Center “Nezlamna” of the “Masha Foundation.”

Powerful phrases for daily use

“I believe in you”

The child feels that their efforts matter, even if the result isn’t perfect. They understand that a supportive adult is nearby, accepting them without judgment.

“Mistakes are part of learning”

Helps children see failure as a step forward rather than a catastrophe. Try using the word “experience” instead of “mistake.” It emphasizes progress rather than dwelling on the past.

“You have the right to try your own way”

Supports independence and creativity, reduces fear of evaluation, and allows risk-taking and learning from mistakes. Encourages taking responsibility for one’s actions.

“I’m proud of your efforts”

Highlights the process and effort, not just the outcome. Builds intrinsic motivation.

“You can ask when something is unclear”

Removes fear of looking “not smart enough” and encourages curiosity. Helps develop friendly and trusting relationships.

“I’m here even if things don’t go perfectly”

Creates a sense of safety and support, reducing anxiety. Turns setbacks into opportunities for growth.

“I trust your decisions”

Supports independence and builds inner strength. Fosters basic trust not only in adults but also in themselves.

Why it works

Children gain emotional protection from the fear of mistakes. They develop internal confidence, understanding that their value does not depend on grades. Motivation grows for experimentation and creativity, not just giving correct answers.

“As important as the words themselves is sincerity. Any phrase spoken without warmth loses its magic,” emphasizes the psychologist.
