Buying furniture and decor for your home can be expensive. However, some items should be purchased brand new for safety and quality reasons as used items can bring some inconvenience, according to the Real Simple website.
Mattresses
Mattresses can be quite expensive. People sleep on them for at least eight hours a day. Used mattresses are cheaper, and many may be tempted to go for it.
However, there is a significant risk of bed bugs, getting rid of which can be very difficult and expensive. The entire house will need to be disinfected.
A used mattress also won't last as long as a new one. Old mattresses can be worn out and worsen the quality of sleep. Therefore, it's not worth risking your home and health.
Bedding
Experts do not recommend buying used bedding for the same reasons why you shouldn't buy a used mattress.
Any fabric, when ironed, reduces its hygroscopic function, and therefore absorbs moisture worse. Sleep will be disturbed because the fabric can no longer provide a normal body temperature regime.
Children's furniture
When you see a kids' crib on sale, you might want to save money, but it can threaten the child's health. The crib may be so old that it does not meet modern safety standards.
Pots and pans with a non-stick layer
Cookware with a non-stick coating is useful for cooking any dishes. It should be in every kitchen, but not be skimped on.
Much of the old cookware with non-stick coating is made from dangerous and toxic materials.
You can easily find inexpensive non-stick cookware that does not have scratches on the surface.
Small household appliances
Small appliances, such as blenders, toasters, and food processors, should always be purchased brand new. This is because old or used appliances can cause fires.
Vacuum cleaners
Buying a used vacuum cleaner is not worth it, as you never know how many years the appliance has been used and whether its parts have been replaced.
Such a device can also need a new filter, which is an additional expense.
Lamps
There may be a temptation to buy an antique lamp at a sale, but it's important to resist. Vintage lamps may have faulty or old wiring, which can cause a fire.
