People who reach the highest levels in their careers and businesses tend to use a specific vocabulary. They consciously avoid phrases that reinforce failure, shift responsibility, or limit personal growth. RBC-Ukraine explains which phrases you should avoid if you want to achieve success.

The human brain works such that every phrase we say shapes our internal reality and influences our future actions. Experts identify five specific statements that you will never hear from truly successful people. If you want to improve your life, these phrases should be removed from your everyday vocabulary.

That's not my job

Saying that certain tasks are outside your responsibilities is a major sign of limited thinking. Successful people view any challenge as an opportunity to grow and develop new skills.

When an unexpected situation arises, or a team needs support, leaders are always ready to step in, even if the task falls outside their area of expertise. Refusing to help with the phrase "I'm not paid for this" can immediately damage trust with managers and partners. Instead, high achievers say: "I'll help figure this out" or "Let's think about how we can handle this together."

That's simply impossible

When faced with serious difficulties, people with a conventional mindset often give up quickly and accept defeat. The phrase "that's impossible" acts like a wall that blocks creative problem-solving.

Successful people see obstacles as interesting engineering or management challenges. Instead of declaring something impossible, they ask the right questions. They look for alternatives by asking: "What resources are we missing to make this happen?" or "How can we work around this limitation?" This approach encourages creativity and helps find solutions even in seemingly hopeless situations.

We've always done it this way

The world is changing at an incredible pace, and methods that worked yesterday may become completely ineffective today. Holding on to outdated traditions and fearing innovation is a direct path to decline.

Successful entrepreneurs and professionals are constantly looking for ways to optimize processes, making them cheaper, faster, and more effective. The phrase "we've always done it this way" signals laziness and a reluctance to leave one's comfort zone. Leaders are always open to testing new ideas and adopting modern technologies because flexibility is a key competitive advantage in today's market.

I just don't have time for this

Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day—from an ordinary employee to a billionaire. The difference lies entirely in how people prioritize. When someone says they don't have time for exercise, learning, or an important project, they are actually admitting that these things are not a priority for them.

Successful people never present themselves as victims of circumstances or a lack of time. Instead, they honestly say: "This is not my priority right now" or "I am consciously choosing to spend my time on another task." This wording restores a sense of control over one's life and schedule.

It's all because of them

The habit of blaming others—colleagues, managers, circumstances, or even bad weather—is one of the biggest weaknesses. Looking for someone to blame does not solve problems; it only wastes valuable energy and damages relationships within a team.

True leaders take full responsibility for their decisions and their consequences. Even if a mistake was made by a subordinate, a successful manager examines their own failures in oversight or delegation.

Instead of assigning blame, they ask themselves: "What can I do right now to fix the situation?" and "What lesson should we learn from this failure?" This ability to acknowledge their own mistakes allows them to continue growing.
